My mother had a habit of bringing men home frequently. I hated being looked at strangely by her boyfriends, so I made my clothes, hairstyle, and even the way I spoke masculine. On nights when my mother's boyfriend was over, I felt like I had no place at home, so I often spent my time outside in the middle of the night. It was during one of those lonely nights that Mr. Nakata, who lived next door, called out to me. He took care of me as if I were his own child; he became a father figure to me... and the first person I ever felt attracted to. Several years have passed since then, and I have reunited with the man who was my first love.
